Regulation of growth rate of young of balanus balanoides crustacea cirripedia in experimental conditions
Experiments were carried out in the Kandalaksha Bay (White Sea) [USSR] in July-Aug. 1979. Plates with the sedimented young of B. balanoides were placed in a laboratory device with a flow rate gradient and equal food concentration. Every 2-3 days for 1 mo., the rostro-carinal diameter was measured in all animals. The periods of growth alternate with those of rest in each animal. Estimates of the actual specific growth rate depend on the flow rate according to a hyperbolic equation corresponding to the Rashevsky's model for the ration at different food concentrations. The duration of the periods of rest varies with the flow rate and is characterized by a high constant dispersion. The mechanism of growth regulation and variations of size of the animals growing under different conditions are discussed.
