The synthesis of pyridine nucleotide independent L-lactate dehydrogenase was induced by sodium lactate in both growing and resting cells of D. dendroides. All non-sugar C sources, such as ethanol, glycerol and pyruvate, were inefficient as inducing agents. Experiments with cycloheximide indicated that induction of enzyme synthesis depends on de novo synthesis. Addition of glucose to induced growing cells caused a rapid loss of lactate dehydrogenase activity. The glucose effect was not reverted by the addition of 1 or 5 mM dibutyryl cAMP, suggesting that cAMP is not involved in the mechanism of catabolic repression in D. dendroides.
