Regulatory mechanism of membrane lipids in tetrahymena in relation to environmental adaptation of membrane lipids

Membrane 2(5): 18-28

Regulatory mechanism of membrane lipids in tetrahymena in relation to environmental adaptation of membrane lipids

The membrane structure and lipid composition, changes in membrane lipids due to temperature and nutritional factors and the underlying mechanisms were studied in Tetrahymena. Membrane lipid changes were attributable to acyl chains and polar groups of phospholipids. Phosphatidylethanolamine increased in the membrane when the mobility of the membrane increased as with high temperature culturing and ergosterol replacement, but decreased when membrane mobility decreased as with chimylalcohol addition. Unsaturation of the acyl chains contributed to the membrane lipid changes.
