Relationship between fat intake cholesterol saturated and poly unsaturated fats serum cholesterol metabolic control hemo globin a 1c and retinopathy in diabetic children

Revue de Pediatrie 17(4): 259-270

Young diabetics (32) divided into 2 groups on the basis of their serum cholesterol levels as compared to the mean for the entire group were studied. The 2 groups were comparable for age, duration of diabetes, weight and insulin dosage. The degree of control was evaluated clinically by determination of HbA1c. Food intake, expressed in terms of total calories, percentage carbohydrate, protein, fats, cholesterol and saturated and polyunsaturated fats, was calculated by questioning the patient about his food intake over the past 7 days. Early retinal complications were looked for by angiofluorography. Serum cholesterol in all diabetics was within the normal range for non-diabetic children (186.6 .+-. 35.4 mg/dl). The degree of control for the group as a whole was satisfactory (7.5 .+-. 2.5%). Fat intake accounted for 38% of total caloric intake on the average. Mean cholesterol intake/m2 and per day was 240 .+-. 100 mg and the P/S [polyunsaturated fat/saturated fat] ratio was 0.25 .+-. 0.24. A statistically significant relationship was not demonstrated between serum cholesterol, the degree of control, food intake (including cholesterol and the P/S ratio) and the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy. Consequently, it is unnecessary to systematically modify the spontaneous food intake of diabetic children with the hypothetical aim of lowering serum cholesterol.
