Relationship between laboratory mice and the subspecies mus musculus domesticus based on restriction endo nuclease cleavage patterns of mitochondrial dna
The mitochondrial DNA of the house mouse, M. musculus, in 25 different laboratory strains showed identical cleavage patterns on digestion with 9 different restriction endonucleases. The cleavage patterns were identical to those of Canadian wild mice, M. m. domesticus, but clearly different from the patterns of 3 Asian subspecies, M. m. bactrianus, M. m. castaneus and M. m. molossinus. Based on comparison of the cleavage maps of the 4 sspp., the time of divergence between M. m. domesticus and the 3 Asian subspecies was 10-2.5 .times. 106 yr. Apparently, the genetic background of laboratory mice is mainly derived from M. m. domesticus.
