Relationship between nitrogen content in new spruce needle growth and soil aeration in clearings

In fresh clearings and in a small-leaved forest, the N content in needles of spruce regrowth was determined during 7 yr. In wet years, raising the level of soil-ground water suppressed root regrowth reduced N content in needles. In lowlands, inundated for a long period, the N concentration can be lowered to 0.5-0.6%, growth is suppressed even in the 1st wet year and some individuals die off.
