Relationship between nitrogen status of leaves and nitrogenous components in various organs in adult satsuma mandarin trees citrus unshiu

Whether arginine or asparagine is a better advisory index than total N content of leaves was investigated. Relationships between several N compounds in various organs and total N concentration in leaves of 22-year-old satsuma mandarin trees (C. unshiu Marc.) receiving different rates of N fertilizer were examined. Total N concentration in leaves showed an increasing tendency with increasing N fertilizer application up to 223g N/tree/year and remained at a saturated N level when given over 223g N. Arginine content in leaves and 2-3-year-old stem sections and asparagine content in young fruit harvested in late June showed wide ranges of distribution and increased in a concave fashion with increases of N content of leaves. These suggest that these compounds are better diagnostic indice to evaluate the N levels of trees than total N content of leaves.
