Relationship between the cholesterol level in the blood serum of hens and chicks of the meat and both egg and meat type

Relationship between the cholesterol level in the blood serum of hens and chicks of the meat and both egg and meat type

Roczniki Nauk Rolniczych Seria B Zootechniczna 100(4): 103-110

Biale-Brwinowskie strain cocks (538) and hens (1028), and 116 cocks and 46 hens of RIR [Rhode Island Red], 8 wk, 8-9 mo. or 1 yr of age, were studied from 1974-1977. These results were compared to the body weight of 5 and 8 wk birds and with the level of production features. The relationship between the cholecholesterol level in blood of mothers and their progeny was investigated. The blood cholesterol level of 8 wk old chicks was more closely related to the body weight at 5 wk than 8 wk. The relationship was positive in Biale Brwinowskie cocks and negative in hens as well as in RIR chicks of either sex. The negative, non-significant correlation coefficients between the cholesterole level in blood of hens and the sexual maturity rate and egg production for the first 100 days suggested that the cholesterol level in blood of 8 wk chicks cannot be a criterion in the estimation of future egg production. The blood serum cholesterol level does not seem to be significantly related to hatchability.
