Relationship between the state of ovary at 40 100 days post partum and the conception achieved during induced estrus in extensively kept beef cattle

The functional state of the ovary was examined on Hereford cows kept on pasture for extended periods. For synchronizing, PRID S4B-Abbot spiral was used . Examinations were carried out immediately before estrus-synchronization and on 1st and 2nd inseminations. Distribution of ovarial state in the population was evaluated between 40-100th days post partum. Examinations were carried out in the season of beef cattle breeding, May. Ratio of cows with inactive but functional ovaries was higher (about 40%) than expected on the basis of regular cycles. This state may be regarded as a concomitant of beef cattle keeping which leads to anestrus turning into periodic infertility. This ovarial state does not raise difficulties for conception within 100 days post partum if an estrus-induction method is applied. Conception results (77.1%) do not differ significantly from those in cycle (about 79%).
