Relative resistance of aphid predator coccinella septempunctata to insecticides

The safety margin of 19 insecticides for the grubs of the aphid predator, C. septempunctata Linn. was determined by bioassay technique. Relative toxicity values were higher in the case of phorate, phosphamidon, diazinon, malathion, formothion, phenthoate, and methyl parathion as compared to that of ethyl parathion, and lower in the case of fenitrothion, Dibrom (Ortho), dichlorvos, rotenone, leptophos, trichlorfon, lindane and p-p' DDT. The least toxic insecticides were Aphidan, endosulfan and nicotine sulfate, which gave < 50% mortality even at 1% concentration. A comparison of relative resistance values of the grubs and adults of C. septempunctata, in relation to the important aphid pests Aphis craccivora Koch., Lipaphis erysimi Kalt., Dactynotus carthami H.R.L. and Aphis gossypii Glover indicated that of the insecticides tested, endosulfan, lindane and Aphidan had a high safety margin for both stages of the predator, being at the same time effective against the aphid pests.
