American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene 27(6): 1268-1273



The mosquito breeding area of Lake Apastepeque, El Salvador, was treated 11 times over a 7 wk period with R. culicivorax to control A. albimanus and A. pseudopunctipennis pseudopunctipennis. Parasitism averaged 58% but varied according to treatment and site. Three applications made during evening hours (to avoid wind and wave action) produced 86% parasitism. No significant differences in susceptibility to R. culicivorax occurred between instars or species. No correlation was found between nematode dosage rates and levels of parasitism. Parasitism averaged about 60% of the desired level and Anopheles populations dropped from > 10/dip at the beginning of the release program to 0.6/dip at the end (a 94% reduction). This is the 1st successful attempt to control mosquitoes on a large scale by using a parasite or pathogen.
