Repair of gamma irradiation induced single stranded dna breaks in a physarum polycephalum myxomycete

The technique of sedimentation in an alkaline sucrose gradient and analysis of specific radioactivity for DNA subnuclear fractions were used to study the repair of gamma-radiation-induced single-stranded breaks (ssb) of DNA in Physarum polycephalum myxomycete at different stages of mitotic cycle was studied. After irradiation in a dose of 1 kGy in the middle of G2-phase DNA ssb are completely repaired during 2 h of postirradiation incubation. Irradiation of plasmodium in the S-phase is not accompanied by a complete repair of DNA ssb. After irradiation in the G2-phase repair of DNA ssb are mainly initiated and proceed with a higher rate on DNA sites associated with nuclear matrix.
