Reproducibility of re breathing parameters in normal humans

Measurements of pulmonary tissue volume (Vt) and pulmonary capillary blood flow (.ovrhdot.Qc) by noninvasive rebreathing techniques have been introduced during the last decade. Despite the good agreement betwen Vt and .ovrhdot.Qc and other invasive methods to measure lung water and blood flow, few studies have taken advantage of rebreathing. One possible reason is that surprisingly little is known about the reproducibility of the technique in individuals during the course of time. Vt and .ovrhdot.Qc were measured by rebreathing acetylene in 8 normal young nonsmokers. Both the parameters and their coefficients of variation did not change when the measurements were made in each person in 3 different ways: consecutively, daily during a period of up to 6 wk, and hourly during a 24-h period. The coefficients of variation for Vt ranged from 6-17%, with an average of 9.7% and for .ovrhdot.Qc from 5-17% with an average of 8.9%. In 8 older subjects, the variation was similar to younger subjects. Rebreathing can be used experimentally and clinically but measurements should be made in triplicate.
