Reproduction and development of pseudopolydora kempi japonica polychaeta spionidae with special reference to the polar lobe formation

Reproduction and development of pseudopolydora kempi japonica polychaeta spionidae with special reference to the polar lobe formation

Journal of the Faculty of Science Hokkaido University Series VI Zoology 21(4): 355-364

The reproduction and development of the spionid polychaete, P. kempi japonica, were observed throughout the life cycle under laboratory conditions. The male produces the spermatophore in which several bundles of spermatozoa are located. Egg capsules containing about 100-150 eggs are reproduced in the tube of the female. The maturation division of the eggs takes place immediately after oviposition in embryos and nurse eggs. Nurse eggs become morula-like in appearance. The trefoil stage indicated by the appearance of the 1st polar lobe is present before the 1st cleavage of the egg. The 2nd polar lobe was found before the 2nd cleavage. Spiral cleavage in the 8 cell stage was observed. Trochophore larva in the egg capsule ingests yolky granules from the nurse eggs. Larva with 3 setigers hatches from the capsule. Larval metamorphosis takes place 15-30 days after hatching from the capsule, and sexual maturation occurs about 1 wk after metamorphosis.
