Reproduction and early development of the gudgeon gobio gobio part 2 larval and juvenile periods

Reproduction and early development of the gudgeon gobio gobio part 2 larval and juvenile periods

Folia Zoologica 28(1): 55-64

The larval developmental period of the gudgeon, i.e., the period from the beginning of exogenous food intake till the disappearance of all embryonic organs and development of scale rudiments, and the early juvenile period that follows were described. The descriptions are based on observations made in the gudgeon population in the Jihlava River [Czechoslovakia] in 1976. In connection with 4 gregarious spawnings, the larval period proceeded in 4 successive periods between late May and early July, each lasting 13 and 15 days at mean water temperature 12.6 and 15.0.degree. C, respectively. Descriptions are given of the basic morphological traits and ecological properties of the larvae during successive steps of development, as defined according to Lange et al. (1974). During its early development, the gudgeon shows certain specific traits (e.g., delayed development and paucity of pigmentation of body surface; feeble development of embryonic respiratory organs; very early development of pectoral fins; markedly benthic life habits), which justify establishing a separate subfamily Gobioninae within the family Cyprinidae (Kryzanovskij 1949).
