Reproduction and embryonic development of cichlasoma tetracanthum

The reproduction and embryonic development of the endemic Cuban species C. tetracanthum were studied under Cuban conditions. Mass spawning of C. tetracanthum was observed from late March to late May. The breeding pairs spawned in previously prepared dish-shaped nests 30-70 cm deep. The horizontal diameter of nests at the upper edge was 47-110 cm (.hivin.x = 73.4). The actual act of spawning took place in pairs and was accompanied by characteristic behavior. During incubation the eggs and subsequently the offspring were cared for and protected by both parents. The incubation of eggs took a total of 7 days and 19 h at a mean water temperature of 28.07.degree. C. The embryo hatched in the course of the 7th embryonic step. Hatching took 4.5 h. The mean embryo length on hatching was 3.65 mm. Numerous adaptations serving to improve the respiration processes under unfavorable environmental conditions were observed during development.
