Reproduction and larval development of the briny polychaete annelid streblospio shrubsolii

The larval development of the Spionidae Streblospio shrubsolii (Buchanan, 1890) is unknown. The aim of the present work was to describe its different developmental stages in the Bay of Arcachon [France], from spawning to the benthic recruitment phase. We have made parallel observations by breeding the young stages in the laboratory and comparing them with larval samples taken periodically from the natural habitat. In the mixo-polyhaline waters of the eastern lagoons of the Bay of Arcachon, spawning extends from April to May. The relatively few eggs are deposited on the inner surface of the tube of the female. The larval development, a lecithotrophic type, is rapid taking 8 days at a temperature of 15.degree. C. The larva, devoid of motor ciliae, is incubated in the tube of the female. Thick at the beginning, it attains apparent metamerism after 7 days with 13 or 14 segments and a length of less than 600 .mu.m. By now the larva has two pairs of eyes and short palps; the yolk is still dense and the incubation continues. All the segments bear setae at the 16 segment stage. The hooded hooks appear on the 7th segment. The gut is fully opened and the grills are beginning to form. At this stage the juveniles worm is released from the incubating tube and in the surrounding mud. A table comparing the more distinctive characteristics of the larvae of Streblospio shrubsolii and S. benedicti has been prepared and discussed.
