Reproduction and larval development of the polychaete polydora ciliata in peter the great bay of the sea of japan russian sfsr ussr



Biologiya Morya (Vladivostok) (6): 36-43



Polydora ciliata spawns throughout the year. A maximum of planktonic larvae ocurs in May. The females deposit 14 to 25 capsules, each containing 10 to 170 eggs. The eggs are rich in yolk and have a diameter of 84-99 .mu.m. About 10% of eggs do not divide (abortive cleavage) and serve as food for developing embryos. Each capsule is joined to the next one and attached to the wall of the tube of mother by two thin stalks. The larvae develop in capsules until they have 3 larval segments. Having utilised all yolk, the metatrochophores hatch and enter the plankton. After they have 17-18 setigers the larvae settle and metamorphose. Differences in the reproduction of P. ciliata in different regions are shown.
