Reproduction and larval development of the syllinae syllis variegata

Adults in the phase of scissiparity and stolons at different maturation stages were collected from the Arcachon Bay [France]. A detailed description of the mature stolons was made. The egglaying occurred spontaneously and yielded viable larvae which could be reared until the post-larval stages. The rearing of the juveniles was discontinued as soon as the specific characteristics had been clearly established. The emission of gametes proceeds from stolons of the architomic type without production of a hatching sac. The trochophore stage is pelagic. Provided with a narrow polystic prototroch, the larva soon gets paired eyes and leads a pelagic lecithotropic life. The achaetous and monotroch metatrochophore becomes rapidly benthic (erpochaeta) before the appearance of the first setigerous segment. After 2 weeks the first setigerous segment appears while a detritivorous regime takes place and will persist until the end of development. The larva adheres strongly to the sediment by the ventral side of the terminal tip of the pygidium; this characteristic is found in other species of Syllinae as well. The larval growth is rapid; it is completed in 4 weeks. The different setigerous segments appear while the various cephalic and somatic appendages are differentiating according to a precise chronology which is described in this paper. This work has established a comparative table of the present known larvae of Syllinae. More generally, a comparison of the morphology and the ethology of the larvae belonging to the subfamilies Syllinae and Autolytinae is proposed.
