Reproduction and larval ecology of the sandworm neanthes virens from southern hokkaido japan

Spawning swarms of Neanthes virens at Usujiri port, southern Hokkaido, centered around the first and last quarters of the moon in June and July of 1981-1983, when the sea water temperature was more than 10.degree. C. The development from egg to juvenile was observed in the laboratory. According to larval behaviour, the development is divided into pelagic and demersal phases. The pelagic phase, which consists of pre-trochopore, trochopore, and early nectochaete stage, lasts about 9 days at 13.degree. C. The demersal phase, which consists of late nectochaete stage lasts about 25 days. Nutrition for pelagic larvae is yolk. Demersal larvae begin feeding on animal food. The rearing experiment revealed a definite relation between developmental rate and temperature: Q10 values during the non-feeding phase were constant, being 2.53 on the average. The spatial and temporal distribution of the larvae in the plankton around the port was investigated. Pre-trochopores and trochopores were abundantly distributed in the surface layer inshore but nectochaetes very few in the water column. Larval population collected in the port temporally varied in number and developmental stage. The larvae spawned in the first period were separated from the population, based upon the developmental rate in the laboratory experiment. The number of them decreased in the pelagic phase but increased in the demersal phase in the port.
