Reproduction in a mountain population of the side blotched lizard uta stansburiana reptilia lacertilia iguanidae

Reproduction in a mountain population of the side blotched lizard uta stansburiana reptilia lacertilia iguanidae

Journal of Herpetology 11(1): 31-35

Reproduction was studied in a mountain population of the lizard U. stansburiana hesperis at 1585-1829 m in the San Gabriel Mountains of southern California [USA]. Lizards were active 12 mo. of the year. Oviducal eggs were present from 12 April-1 Aug. Females laid a maximum of 3 clutches containing 1-6 eggs during 1974. Average clutch size was 3.5 eggs. Spermiogenesis began during Nov. at 1829 m, was delayed until Jan. at 1585 m and concluded during early Aug. Hatchlings appeared in early July; some of them reached adult size (42 mm SVL [snout-vent length]) by Sept. Fat bodies underwent a seasonal cycle showing enlargement in both sizes in autumn and in females during Feb.-March prior to yolk deposition for clutch 1. Winter activity probably allowed females to begin yolk deposition early enough to produce 3 egg clutches.
