Reproduction in acanthocotyle greeni new species monogenea from the skin of raia spp at plymouth england uk

Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom 60(1): 81-88

A new and rare monogenean species A. greeni from Raia spp. at Plymouth is described. The parasite differs from other Plymouth acanthocotylids principally by accumulating bunches of up to 80 or so eggs tethered to the parent by stalks and covered by a prominent asymmetrical extension of the body. Embryonic development begins as soon as each egg leaves the uterus, and the non-ciliated oncomiracidium from the older eggs of the bundle, stimulated to hatch by host mucus, are thought to reinfect the same host, while the younger eggs, after dispersal of the bunch, release larvae having the opportunity to invade new hosts. Sperm transfer is by non-sclerotized spermatophores.
