Reproduction in captive striped skunks mephitis mephitis

Reproduction in captive striped skunks mephitis mephitis

American Midland Naturalist 100(2): 452-455

Captive striped skunks in central New York [USA] breed between mid-Feb. and mid-April. Gestation length ranges from 59-77 days and depends on the data of mating. Parturition occurs throughout May and early June. The majority (77.1%) of the births occur between 10-30 May. Litter size averages 4.28 pups/litter and ranges from 1-10. Production of a 2nd litter by the same female during a single breeding season is discussed, and evidence for synchronization of a 2nd estrous period is presented. Females outnumber males at birth (P < 0.05) and at weaning (P < 0.05).
