Reproduction in rattus exulans in rangoon burma

Reproduction in rattus exulans in rangoon burma

Mammalia 44(3): 349-360

Although smaller than the females at the lower head and body length classes, male R. exulans eventually exceed females in weight and head and body length. The 50% point for opening of the vaginal orifice occurs at a smaller head and body length than the 50% point for the presence of corpora lutea, indicating that opening of the vagina and the 1st estrus are not coincident events. The 50% for the presence of corpora lutea in females corresponds precisely with the 50% point for scrotal testes in males. All males examined with a head and body length of 105 mm or greater had sperm in the cauda epididymis. Of all females captured, one-third were pregnant and > 1/2 of those captured were either pregnant or lactating. Reproduction occurred throughout the study period and recruitment of young into the population appeared to be rather constant with young animals averaging < one-third of the captures each month of the study.
