As a result of successful breeding, biological studies were made of the reproduction of Imparipes (Imparipes) histricinus Berlese, 1903. The 1st description of the male according to taxonomically relevant characteristics as well as the description of the male genital capsule, both in its normal position and during copulation, is presented. A variability in the sizes of both sexes was determined in overaged breeds, when the mycelium serving as food showed insufficient growth. There is indication that small animals develop from underfed larvae, presenting an atrophic form. The male shows a pre-copulation behavior carrying the female chysalis until shedding to the adult stage; this phase can last up to 37 h. It differentiates between male and female chrysalis. This suggests the existence of a larval female sexual pheromone. In the course of the shedding of the female to an adult the male attaches himself to the dorsum of the female by means of his genital plate, and with the aid of his four pair of legs he slides to the rear end of the female body. As soon as he reaches this, he unlocks his genital plate and quickly takes up the copulation position, in which the rear ends of the bodies of both the copulants are turned towards each other. In the course of the copulation the dorsal part of the male genital capsule, the genital plate, is inserted into the female genital opening; this is a transversally situated fissure which is formed at the opening of the ventral plate of the female. The ventral section of the capsule is then slipped underneath the ventral plate. The rear part of the inserted genital plate tips forward and leans against the female posterior genital sclerite, which serves as a support. Owing to this anchorage acting against the tractive power of both the copulants a stabile coupling is provided. The duration of the copulation is .apprx. 25 min (ranging from 15-40 min). Unfertilized females, reared in isolation, have exclusively male descendants after a delayed ovulation; these differ neither in their habitus nor in their behavior from the male descendants of fertilized females. Parthenogenesis of a representative of Scutacaridae was shown for the 1st time.
