Reproduction in the nyala tragelaphus angasi mammalia ungulata

Reproduction in the nyala tragelaphus angasi mammalia ungulata

Journal of Zoology (London) 204(1): 129-142

Several aspects of the reproductive biology of Nyala were examined in a sample of Nyala culled in the interests of habitat management. Male puberty, at the age of about a year, is followed by a change in pelage color and form. This changes from the red-brown coat of the female to the charcoal-gray of the adult male. Social sexual maturity in males is only attained at .apprx. 5 yr, there is no indication of reduced fertility with age. There is no seasonal reproductive cycle in the male. Sexual maturity in females may occur at 14 mo. with 50% of the females studied attaining sexual maturity by .apprx. 20 mo. Anestrus does not occur until reproductive senescence at .apprx. 14 yr. Multiple ovulations were recorded once in 217 pregnancies (0.46%). Fertility in sexually mature females was 100% with a mean interval between births calculated at 297 days.
