Reproduction in water buffalo bubalus bubalis in the northern territory of australia

Reproduction in water buffalo bubalus bubalis in the northern territory of australia

Australian Wildlife Research 8(2): 335-348

In the northern portion of the Northern Territory most buffalo cows calve during the late wet or early dry season; they conceive 10.5-11 mo. earlier. The average age for 1st conception is 28.5 mo. Puberty is attained at between 14-19 mo.; conception at puberty has been observed only once, and this cow aborted after 3 wk. Percentage pregnancy was high, being 76% in the larger of the 2 groups surveyed. For cows of 3 yr old and younger, the pregnancy rate was < 5%. The period of fertility in bulls is probably 8 mo. long (possible 4 mo. but this is questionable). By adjusting for differences in age (animal weight) some minor problems are overcome but abattoir samples showed some monthly effects which remain after adjustment for age. Since only 2 bulls were sampled per month in the field, it was difficult to detect any significant monthly effects, but there are some signs of seasonality.
