The reproductive performance of pigs in subtropical locations was investigated. Data were collected in South Africa, where 2 herds, the basic breeding herd and the production herd, were kept separately. Altogether 2455 litters from the basic breeding herd and 3882 litters from the production herd were available for the evaluation. Litter size and litter-weight characteristics on the 1st day (in the basic breeding herd also on the 21st day) were used to evaluate reproductive performance. The investigation also comprised the time between weaning and first service as well as the conception rate. The 1st litter of pure-bred Landrace sows compared unfavorably with Large-White sows only in the rearing weights (-0.34 kg/piglets). under the more stringent conditions of the subsequent litters the lower productive adaptability of the Landrace sows also results in smaller litter size at birth (-0.89 piglets). With regard to the reproductive performance of cross-breds in the 1st litter, no individual heterosis effects were found. Maternal heterosis effects were unexpectedly large: 19.9% with respect to number born live, 14.4% for total number born and 17.8% for litter weight at birth. With regard to the performance of the multiparous sows. Litter 3-8 the reverse was found, i.e., high individual and low maternal heterosis effects. However, the maternal effects were still statistically significant.
