Reproduction of peromyscus alstoni mammalia muridae under laboratory conditions

Reproduction of peromyscus alstoni mammalia muridae under laboratory conditions

Acta Zoologica Mexicana Nueva Serie (16): 1-27

In this paper we present information about the reproduction of a colony of Peromyscus alstoni under laboratory conditions, including sexual development, estrous cycle, length of gestation, parturition, sex ratio, litter size, and postnatal growth. Age of first reproduction averaged 174.5 (65-241) days for 70% of the sample. The average estrous cycle was 4.5 days. Births occurred throughout the year, and no seasonal activity was found. The average length of gestation was 27.3 .+-. 1.1 (26-30) days. The sequence parturition is similar to that found in other murids. During parturition it is possible to distinguish three phases: preexpulsion, expulsion, and postexpulsion. 80% of the births occurred between 800 and 1200 h during the light period of a light-dark cycle 10 L:14 D. The average litter size was 3.1 and the sex ratio at birth was 1 .lambda. :1.6.female. Growth in body size was faster during the first 35 days after birth, at the end of which the average length was 94.3 mm. The length of tail and the body weight maintain rapid growth up to 55 days of age.
