Reproductive activity in dairy cows post partum 2. ovarian and sexual activity

Reproductive activity in dairy cows post partum 2. ovarian and sexual activity

Ovarian and estrous activity were studied in 415 cows that calved in 4 dairy herds over 1 yr. Palpations per rectum were carried out twice a week for over 100 days post partum. During this period data were collected on uterine involution, ovulation incidence estrus and inseminations. In most cows, ovarian function was apparent before estrus was shown. Uterine involution was estimated to occur in 2 stages, the 1st by 17 days .+-. 6.4 and the 2nd by 28 days .+-. 10.1 post partum. The interval post partum to 1st ovulation was 41 days .+-. 20.8; to 1st estrus 49 days .+-. 23.4; and to 1st ovulation with estrus 58 days .+-. 23.0. Significant improvements in fertility could be made as a result of changes in management, including time of service post partum and improvements in efficiency and reliability of estrus detection.
