Reproductive behavior and mechanisms of spawning and fertilization in the green toad bufo viridis and their adaptive significance

Reproductive behavior and mechanisms of spawning and fertilization in the green toad bufo viridis and their adaptive significance

Zoologicheskii Zhurnal 65(10): 1535-1543

Peculiarities of the reproductive behaviour and the spawning and fertilization mechanisms in the green toad are described. Positive assortative mating according to the specimen body sizes is realized as a result of keen competition between males. Big males expel their smaller rivals from pairs. The spawning and fertilization proceed by the laying of reproductive products of the partners in a scoop-microreservoir formed by the partners legs; this scoop increases probability of meeting of spermatozoa and eggs and permits to reach maximal effectiveness of fertilization. Parental care is manifested only by males; it consists of protecting and aerating clutches during the incubation period.
