Research on the diet of etmopterus spinax chondrichthyes squalidae

Research on the diet of etmopterus spinax chondrichthyes squalidae

Bollettino di Pesca Piscicoltura e Idrobiologia 31(1-2): 257-266

Food habits of E. spinax were investigated by the analysis of the gastric contents of 238 specimens trawled on bathyal muddy bottoms of the Gulf of Genoa (350-1000 m depth). The young specimens, fished on epibathyal bottoms (about 450 m depth), in late spring, feed mainly on Pasiphaeidae, Meganyctiphanes norvegica, Heteroteuthis dispar and fish. The adults, caught at 500-1000 m depth throughout the year, were feeding predominantly upon fish and large sized cephalopods; the whole prey suggests a pelagic hunting behavior. E. spinax may be a pelagic predator that reaches various levels of the trophic net without taking particular advantage of the bathyal resources of economic interest. An eventual competition could exist with the valued species because of the utilization of the same feed.
