Residual milk and rate of milk secretion in sahiwal and brown swiss x sahiwal cows

Residual milk and rate of milk secretion in sahiwal and brown swiss x sahiwal cows

Indian Journal of Animal Sciences 52(1): 4-8

ISSN/ISBN: 0367-8318

During July, 1979 residual milk in 54 cows (18 Sahiwal and 36 Brown Swiss .times. Sahiwal [B .times. S]) during peak lactation was determined. The B .times. S cows were divided into 2 groups. In group 1 the level of production was 8 kg which was equal to that of Sahiwal cows and in group 2 it was 14 kg. The cows were milked by hand at 0600h, 1200h and 1200h. Just after milking oxytocin (10 IU) was injected into the jugular vein to obtain the residual milk. The cows took more time to letdown milk during noon milking than during morning and evening milkings. At all times of milking the absolute and relative amounts of residual milk were more in Sahiwal cows. Residual milk was 17.54, 8.80 amd 10.21% in Sahiwal and B .times. S cows of groups 1 and 2, respectively. In all animals residual milk correlated with total milk. Percent milk was not correlated with total milk. The amount and percent or residual milk were independent of the yield at normal milking.
