Resistance spectrum and subgrouping of organo phosphorus compounds in a field population of the egyptian cotton leafworm spodoptera littoralis lepidoptera noctuidae

Resistance was investigated in a field population of the cotton leafworm collected from Dakahlia Governorate [Egypt] over a period of 5 yr. Levels of resistance to various OPs [organophosphates] were determined since 1969 and extended to 1973 to include recently introduced insecticides. Larvae (P and F1) were tested when 8 days old by the topical application of 0.5 .mu.l droplets of insecticide solutions in acetone. The extent of resistance varies among the different cases investigated. It is of high level and more inclusive in the majority of OPs having the methyl configurations, and less in OPs of ethyl substituents. Four types of OP subgroups may be present. The 1st is typified by OPs with methyl group having the normal and common configurations, e.g., methyl parathion, Gusathion M., trichlorfon and fenitrothion. The 2nd type is typified by OPs with a methyl group having a modified structure, e.g., monocrotophos, Gardona and Phosvel. Resistance to any of the insecticides in both subgroups rose even after the compound was replaced by another related or unrelated OP. In the 3rd type, i.e., parathion, Cyolane, Cytrolane and chlorpyrifos (diethyl-group), there is a low but not significant level of resistance, in spite of the fact that intense amounts of these chemicals were used in the area under study. In the 4th type, exemplified by EPN (1 ethyl-group), a moderate level of resistance was observed. It may be expected that the compounds in the 3rd and possibly the 4th categories may retain their effectiveness over a longer period.
