Response of french bean phaseolus vulgaris cultivar burpee stringless to planting time in relation to plant density

Response of vegetable French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), cv. Burpee Stringles, to nine dates of planting (5th June, 25th June, 15th July, 5th August, 25th August, 15th September, 5th October, 25th October and 15th November) and four plant densities (1.00 lakh, 1.25 lakh, 2,00 lakh and 2.50 lakh plants per hectare) was studied on sandy loam soil, low in fertility, during 1978-79 and 1980-81 at the Experiment Station, Hessaraghatta of the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bangalore[India]. Plantings done up to the 5th August gave consistently higher yields as compared to later plantings. Environmental factors affected growth and yield components such as plant height, number of branches, pod number per plant and pod weight per plant leading to lower pod yields. The vegetable pod yields at 2.00 lakh and 2.50 lakh plants/ha were on par with each other, but were significantly higher than 1.00 lakh and 1.25 lakh plants/ha.
