Response of hybrid poplar to simultaneous exposure to ozone and per oxy acetyl nitrate

Hybrid poplars [Populus maximowicsii .times. trichocarpa] were exposed for 4 h under controlled conditions to either 353 .mu.g/m3 O3, 890 .mu.g/m3 PAN [peroxyacetyl nitrate] or the 2 pollutants combined at these concentrations. No visible symptoms were produced by exposure to PAN alone. The O3 and O3/PAN exposures produced a dark brown bifacial necrosis. The pollutant interaction in each experiment was evaluated statistically by utilizing contrast analysis. In 4 of the 6 experiments, O3 and PAN interacted synergistically. In 2 experiments their effects were additive. This is the 1st demonstration that O3 and PAN can interact synergistically when producing injury to vegetation.
