Response to manganese application and evaluation of chemical extractants to determine available manganese in some arid brown soils of haryana india

Significant responses to Mn application in oats under greenhouse conditions were obtained in 4 out of 10 arid brown soils of Haryana [India]. Mn concentration and uptake in oats were increased several fold with its application. In general, Mn responses were observed when plant Mn concentration was less than 64 ppm. Among the extractants evaluated, N ammonium acetate (exchangeable Mn) was the best extractant for predicting Mn status of these soils. About 3 ppm exchangeable Mn in soils was the critical level. N sodium acetate and N NH4NO3 extractable Mn were less promising soil test methods while M NH4H2PO4 and N ammonium acetone + hydroquinone (reducible MN) were not satisfactory methods to determine available Mn in these soils.
