Results of a 12 year experiment applying rising phosphorus fertilizer rates on calcic chernozem in the county of halle east germany

Starting out from results of a 12-year experiment with rising P fertilizer rates on Calcic Chernozem, investigations were made into the effect of P fertilization on yield. At the beginning of the experiment. DL-soluble P content was 3.3 mg per 100g soil. The test period was subdivided into two substest periods, showing the changes in soil P content and the corresponding yield levels. When soil P content is low, it is necessary for reaching maximum yields to apply a multiple of the P amount taken up by the plants. With rising soil P contents, P fertilizer rates can be continuously reduced. Within the range of 6 to 8 mg P per 100 g soil, P fertilization that equals P uptake by the plants is considered to be efficent. Along with increasing yield levels, soil P reserves are used more efficiently by the plants. Amounts of about 80 to 120 kg P per hectare are necessary to increased DL-soluble P content by 1 mg per 100 g soil.
