Results of a study on bulgarian and foreign watermelon and melon cultivars

Results of a study on bulgarian and foreign watermelon and melon cultivars

Rasteniev"dni Nauki 24(12): 56-61

The watermelon cultivars Mramorna 17 (St), Rossitsa and Bozhura (PRB); Sargashusu, Korai kinch and Segedi sepi (HPR); Taviriiska and Ogoniok (USSR); Crimson and Sugar baby (USA) and the melon cultivars Dessertnaya 5 (St), Tavria, Novocherkaskaia 265, Zolotistaia and Iliiskaia (USSR); Hybrid, 1, Hybrid 5, Vidinski Koravtsi 21, Lyubimets and Tsarevets (PRB) were studied in 1984-1986 at the Experimental Station of Cultivar, Testing in Bourgas [Bulgaria] without irrigation, after the accepted field management and field trial methods. Results of this study and the taste evaluations led to the following conclusions: Cultivars with different vegetation period have to be grown in view of prolonging the period of watermelon and melon consumption. Along with the watermelon cultivars Mramorna 17 and Crimson, cvs Tavriiski (high yielding), Bozhura, Korai kinch, Sugar baby (early) and Sargashusu (with yellow flesh) should be grown. The melon cultivars Hybrid 5, Tsarevets and Novocherkaskaia 265 (early) and Tavria and Zolotistaia (late) ought to be included, too. Attention should be paid to the extension of the watermelon cvs Rositsa and Bozhura (anthracnose resistant) and the melon cultivars Hybrid 1, Hybrid 5, Lyubimets (powdery mildew resistant) and Tsarevets (Fusarium resistant).
