Results of cyto photometric and auto radiographic experiments on the auto catalytic activity of macro nuclear dna during the polymorphic cycle of the ciliate tetrahymena paravorax

Macronuclear DNA amounts of microstome and macrostome forms of T. paravorax are different and can reach 16 Gl [resting stage] in macrostomes. Autoradiography shows that DNA synthesis begins when cells become carnivorous. DNA amounts increase with increase of carnivorous cell volume but the process (succession of doublings of the initial Gl value or gene amplification) is unknown. Macrostome.sbd.microstome transformation takes place without new macronuclear DNA synthesis; distribution of this DNA among the daughter-cell is regulated by a chromatin extrusion process, leading to the restoration of amounts found in initial microstomes. The variations of macronuclear DNA content are reversible processes closely related to cell dimorphism.
