Role of ions in the development of myo epithelial cell contractions in the mammary gland

Contractions of mammary myo-epithelial cells were studied by vital photometry of the mammary alveoli in white mice. Depolarization of the membrane myoepithelium was induced by high concentration of K in the medium, although Na-K-ATPase blockade and electric stimulation resulted in alveoli contraction. Caffeine and Mn ions inhibited myoepithelial contractions. Tetraethylammonium did not change the contractions. An important role of Na, K and Ca was suggested in the development and regulation of alveoli contractions.
