Role of kinetin in the formation of geo tropic response of wheat coleoptiles

Experiments conducted on sections of cv. Garsas wheat coleoptiles [CP] during the elongation phase demonstrated that kinetin at 10-5-10-6 M, introduced by way of agar blocks after 8 h preincubation or directly during geotropic excitation of CP in a lateral direction, did not have any effect on geotropic flexure of coleoptiles due to the absence of kinetin effect on linear growth. Kinetin decreased the activating effect of IAA at concentrations of 10-6 and 10-7 M on the formation of geotropic flexures at the beginning of their realization. A tendency for intensification of the activating effect of IAA at lower (10-8 M) concentrations was manifested. During CP incubation with 14C-labeled IAA, kinetin stimulated its accumulation in tissues but had no effect on polar distribution in the upper and lower coleoptile halves. Changes in IAA-dependent, kinetin-induced, geotropic flexures of CP manifested independently from lateral distribution of labeled IAA, demonstrated that kinetin function was not directly conjugated to the regulation of lateral transport of exogenous IAA.
