An important link of ischemic heart damage [in rats] in infarction is the lipid triad suprevening in the lipid bilayer of cardiomyocyte membranes. This triad consists of the activation of the lipid peroxidation (LPO), phospholipase activation and the detergent effect of high concentrations of fatty acids, and results in an increase of the membrane permeability for Ca and plays an important role in the transition from the reversible ischemic damage to the irreversible. LPO activation in myocardial infarction, in ischemic and nonischemic zones, seems to be the link triggering the lipid triad. Administration of the synthetic LPO inhibitors 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methyl phenol or OP-6 (antioxidants) significantly decreased the ischemic necrosis area, blood enzymes and cardiac contractility disturbances in experimental infarction.
