Role of the mother tuber in the tuberization of the potato solanum tuberosum cultivar bintje

The mother tuber does not seem to favor the process of tuberization of the potato plant cv. Bintje. It seems to delay the tendency that the growing buds show when they are excised and cultured in vitro under unfavorable photoperiodic conditions for tuber initiation (long days; continuous light), plants with their own mother-tubers, plants grown without them and pieces of growing buds cultured in vitro, all show tuber initiation much earlier than the mother-tubers placed under the most favorable conditions for incubation (tubers placed on humid vermiculite; continuous darkness; temperature ranging from 18-20.degree. C; 85-90% relative humidity). Under all photoperiodic conditions, the leaves seem to synthesize a factor ('light factor') that antagonizes the delaying effect that mother tubers exert on growing buds when these become leafy shoots. This retarding effect may be an ecological adaptation that together with the length of the dormant period of tubers allows planting those organs with a low degree of incubation compatible with the development of a normal vegetative cycle.
