Role of the per oxidation of membrane lipids and anti radical protection in the pathogenesis of bronchial asthma

Role of the per oxidation of membrane lipids and anti radical protection in the pathogenesis of bronchial asthma

Terapevticheskii Arkhiv 52(3): 96-100

An increase in the amount of lipid peroxides and a decrease in that of phospholipids (PL), total and fractions, in erythrocyte membranes with a tendency to restoration in the inactive phase of the disease were noted in patients with bronchial asthma in asthmatic states and during the paroxysm. This corresponds to the reduced mean levels of .alpha.-tocopherol in the blood with different activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the blood. With a prolongation of the disease period, a progressive intensification of POL [peroxidation of lipids] and a decrease in the amount of PL in the erythrocyte membranes [having an inverse relationship] are noted in the active phase. The content of .alpha.-tocopherol and the activity of SOD in the blood gradually drop with a close relationship between them and between the level of .alpha.-tocopherol in the blood and lipid peroxides in the erythrocyte membranes. The course of bronchial asthma has 2 phases: compensatory intensification of antiradical protection in the active stage of the disease and exhaustion (decompensation) of it due to an abrupt increase in lipid peroxides. In the inactive phase of the disease the antiradical protection of the cell becomes restored. Intensified POL in the pathogenesis of bronchial asthma paroxysm.
