The calibration procedure for the Milko-Scan 203 is described and results of small-scale experiments are reported. Statistical data are given on an interlaboratory comparison of the Gerber (calibration) method for the determination of the fat content of milk. Repeatability values for IR measurement of the fat protein and lactose content of milk are calculated. Parameters affecting the results of these IR measurements such as temperature and mixing of the milk, lipolysis, chain length of the fatty acids and protein/lactose ratio are discussed. A comparison is made between IR measurements of the fat content of milk at 5730 and 3490 nm.
