Rupture of the heart in blunt chest trauma

Rupture of the heart in blunt chest trauma

Journal of the Oslo City Hospitals 38(2): 17-19

Rupture of the heart is found in about one per cent of patients with blunt chest trauma who are alive on arrival at hospital. The report deals with the last two patients who were treated during 1987, one with right atrial and one with right ventricular rupture. It suggests that patients with rupture of the heart, reaching the hosptial alive, can be successfully managed by acute relief of the tamponade followed by immediate sternotomy and direct suture of the lesion.
