Selected tissue types from prenatal and postmortem human preparations and freshly prepared primate material from the rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) and from pregnant laboratory rats (Wistar strain) were used. Tissues of the CNS and particularly those that were suspected of playing a role in the neural orchestration of endocrine function were investigated. Correlative techniques applied and interfaced with SEM [scanning electron microscopy] were used to examine classical systems, such as the median eminence of the neurohypophyseal system, which has been conceptualized as the final common neuroendocrine pathway in the control of adenohypophyseal metabolism.
