Enamel sealant materials and enamel bonding agents are extremely used in preventive dentistry. Longitudinal fracture planes or lamellae are commonly found in the enamel of anterior teeth.sbd.in areas that are potential sites for sealant or bonding agent application, especially for application of labial veneers. The object of this experiment was to examine the extent of sealant/bonding agent penetration into enamel fracture planes or lamellae. Eighteen anterior teeth, recommended for extraction for periodontal reasons and extracted with elevators, were evaluated for the presence of enamel lamellae using epoxy replicas of the teeth and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). After impressioning for construction of surface reproduction in epon, the teeth were pumiced, etched for 60 secs with 37% phosphoric acid, and the enamel surface was covered with sealant. The teeth were dissolved in 5% formic acid. The enamel surface of the sealant specimens was examined in the SEM for depth of penetration of the sealant into the lamella planes. Of the teeth studied, 3 (17%) had no lamellae on the epoxy replicas. Of the 15 teeth with lamellae, the lines extended through the incisal and middle thirds of the crown. Sealant penetrated the entire length of the lamellae. The average depth of penetration of sealant into the lamella plane was 231 +/-158 microns. Results indicate a deep but variable penetration of enamel sealant into lamellae.
