Seasonal cycle of primary production of nanno phyto plankton and micro phyto plankton in a shallow tropical reservoir

A study of the seasonal variation of the primary production of each fraction of the phytoplankton community (nanno and microphytoplankton) was a carried out in a shallow, turbulent reservoir (Broa Reservoir, Sao Paulo State) [Brazil] from Jan.-Dec. (1975). Monthly average values showed that the fraction < 50 .mu.m contributes the greatest amount of primary production of the phytoplankton community. A slight increase in the microphytoplankton activity during the beginning of spring is attributed to increased turbulence which removed Melosira italica filaments from the sediment. The ecological implications of this pattern of size distribution are discussed, mainly its relationships with the nutritional characteristics of the environment, the use of the fraction < 50 .mu.m as food for microzooplankton and the ecological stability of the system.
